HBO’s “True Blood”

HBO’s newest series, True Blood is written and directed by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) and based on the novel series by Charlaine Harris.  Being an avid vampire fan, I haven’t read any of Harris’s books so I’m unable to tell you if they are any good.  However, based on what I’ve seen in True Blood so far, I’m not quite sure I’d run out to buy one of her books.

Anna Paquin, who played Rogue from X-Men was absolutely gorgeous in that movie! As the main female character in True Blood, she’s far from gorgeous or pretty or good-looking or not even cute as a button.  To my surprise, I can’t believe they didn’t pick someone hotter to play this main character.  But anyway, Paquin plays a character named Sookie Stackhouse who is a telepathic waitress; she’s a blonde, perky barmaid at Merlotte’s, a backwoods bar in post-Katrina Louisiana.  Sookie has been rejected by most of the townspeople for the odd way she is able to hear people’s innermost thoughts. But her luck takes a turn for the better when a vampire named Bill Compton, comes into the bar one evening.

The interesting concept of True Blood is that vampires live among us.  Vampires are out of the closet, per se, thanks to a synthetic, blood-type beverage brewed up by Japanese scientists (and called “Tru Blood”).  This new drink frees the need for vampires to kill human beings for nourishment, therefore clamoring for civil rights.

Definitely a different concept to consider vampires surviving among the living. But eh, the previews looked better than the story sounds. It wasn’t until the third episode that I actually started getting reeled into the story.  The episode ended with Sookie going to Bill Compton’s house where a group of vampires let her into the house and seemed to allegedly feed on her.  I couldn’t wait to find out what happened in the next episode!!

There is definitely lots of vulgar language to spare. To go along with the explicit language is tons of nudity. So I imagine lots of guys will get into this series as well. I mean, in the last episode, you got to see Sookie’s boobies, which I’m sure is what the guys were waiting for.

To watch this series, you, the viewer must have patience.  So far, the show is muddled and slow.  Like I said previously, it’s a great concept story line. Since I’ve already started watching this series, I’m going to stick with it to see what happens. If, and that’s a big if, this series gets booked for a second season, I think it’ll be better than the first.
